Why power chords need distortion to make sense
The power chord has a reputation as a "beginner" chord, easier than a real chord because it only has two notes. It's true that it's simple to play. But that's not why it exists: without distortion, a power chord sounds hollow and pointless — it's precisely the missing third note that makes it indispensable once the sound saturates.

What actually happens when a chord saturates
Distortion doesn't just add grit: it generates new frequencies, absent from the original signal, at the sums and differences of the harmonics already present (a phenomenon called intermodulation). The more notes a chord has close to each other, the more these new frequencies pile up and clash. On a full chord (root, third, fifth), the third adds a whole set of harmonics with no simple relationship to those of the root and fifth: once saturated, the result is a mass of frequencies colliding — the familiar "mud" you hear when playing a full open chord with too much gain.
Why the fifth alone stays clean
The root and the fifth have a very simple frequency ratio (3 to 2): their respective harmonics line up naturally instead of clashing. Distorted, they produce new frequencies that stay close to that alignment rather than creating chaos — with enough gain, you can even hear a perceived fundamental appear an octave below the root, which explains the sense of power and low end that's characteristic of the power chord. That same mechanism is what makes a power chord hollow and pointless clean: without distortion to generate those extra harmonics, all that's left is two bare notes, without the richness of a full chord.
