Two skills learned as one
A typical tutorial teaches bending directly inside a riff or a lick: you push the string "by feel," as part of the phrase, and if it sounds roughly right, you move on. The problem is that this blends two genuinely separate skills — calibrating a bend (reliably reaching a precise pitch on demand) and expressing it musically (knowing when and how to use it in a phrase). As long as calibration has never been isolated and checked on its own, it stays approximate — and the riff around it hides the gap well enough that you never notice.
The most common mistake: under-bending
The most frequent flaw isn't pushing a string too far — it's the opposite: not pushing it far enough. Physically, the extra tension feels like you've "done the move," while the actual pitch reached still falls short of the target — a whole step that lands more like three-quarters of a tone, a note that stays noticeably flat without sounding outright wrong. The check that fixes it
The method that solves this is simple and needs no equipment: play the fretted target note before attempting the bend, hold onto its pitch, then go back to the starting fret and push the string until it matches exactly. That direct, repeated comparison is what trains the ear to recognize the right pitch and the fingers to find it reliably.
