Pentatonic box (neck position)

A pentatonic box (or "position") groups the five notes of a pentatonic scale into a limited area of the neck, usually 4 or 5 frets wide, so it can be played without shifting the hand. "Position 1" is the one taught first: it's anchored on the root note played on the low E string.

One scale, several different boxes

A commonly misunderstood point: there isn't "one" pentatonic box per key, but five overlapping boxes that together cover the whole neck — position 1 is just an entry point, not the entire scale. Guitarshelf's catalog deliberately focuses on this position 1 for now, the most accessible one, before introducing the other four.
