Guitar Buzz: Is It the Setup or Your Technique?

A chord that used to ring clean suddenly starts buzzing, or a new chord never sounds clean no matter how many times you try. Before deciding it's "the guitar" or "you," it's worth telling apart the two families of causes: they get fixed in completely different ways.

Two very different families of causes

Buzz can come from the guitar's physical setup (action set too low, or neck relief out of adjustment) or from fretting-hand technique (a finger placed too far from the fret, or a chord — especially a barre — not fully pressed down). These are two different kinds of problems: one gets fixed on the instrument, the other gets fixed by playing differently.

The sign that tells them apart

The simplest test: does the buzz show up on almost every chord, all over the neck? That's the typical profile of a setup problem. Is it limited to one specific chord, or specifically to barre chords? That's the typical profile of a technique problem — barre chords are specifically flagged as buzz-prone, since they require pressing all six strings down at once instead of just one or two.

If it's the setup: action and relief

Action set too low leaves too little room for the strings to vibrate without hitting the next frets. Neck relief that's out of adjustment — too straight, or too bowed — produces the same result, but concentrated on a specific area of the neck rather than everywhere. That's a physical adjustment to the instrument, not something you fix by playing differently.

If it's technique: finger placement

A finger placed too far from the fret leaves too much string free to vibrate before reaching the contact point, which encourages buzz — the goal is to place the fingertip just behind the fret, without sitting directly on top of it. Not enough pressure, especially on a barre where the index finger has to cover six strings at once, produces the same effect.

Practice it

To isolate the problem, go back to an isolation sheet like Barre — isolating the F chord: if the buzz disappears once you adjust just your finger position, it's technique.
