Warm-up — spider walk (D / G)
The same "spider" pattern as on low E/A, moved to the D and G strings: the middle strings call for a slightly different wrist angle.
Tips
If the E/A spider walk already feels smooth, this one should follow quickly: the only change is wrist position, not the fingering itself.
Understanding this type of exercise
The spider: the chromatic that changes strings
The 1-2-3-4 fingering no longer stays on one string: it moves fret by fret, switching strings with each group. You add string-crossing coordination to finger independence.
Practical tips and common mistakes
- The pick anticipates the string change — it "aims" at the next string while the fretting hand finishes the current group.
- Mute the string you're leaving so it doesn't keep ringing under the next one.
- Keep the left wrist low and stable: it's the sideways movement of the fingers doing the work, not the arm.
