On this grid, F is the only chord offering a genuine alternating-bass option (both the low E and A strings are playable); Dm, Am and C each have only one bass string. This is the reverse of the catalogue's most common case: it's the barre chord that carries the real alternation, not an open one.
Tips
On F only, consciously work the alternation between the two bass strings, on top of holding the barre.
On Dm, Am and C, don't look for an alternation that doesn't exist: the thumb stays on its single available string.
