E minor pentatonic scale — working the descent

Level 2 blues

The same position 1 of the E minor pentatonic as the beginner sheet, but played exclusively downward, from the high root to the low root. It's a neglected direction: most guitarists drill going up and then come back down on reflex, without ever really memorising the reverse path — which shows the moment an improvised line descends without the usual climb before it. Isolating the descent forces you to know it as a route of its own, not just a way back.

Tips

Start from the high root (fret 3, high E string) and go down without ever going back up, not even by one note.
If you hesitate on what comes next, stop and restart from the top instead of guessing by ear.
Once the descent alone is solid, chain up then down: the join at the top is where the old reflex creeps back in most easily.

Understanding this type of exercise

Why isolate the descent

Most players climb a scale confidently and hesitate coming down, simply because they've never worked it separately. This sheet takes position 1 of the minor pentatonic in the descending direction only.

Practical tips and common mistakes

  • Start each repetition on the high root and finish on the low root — not "somewhere in the middle".
  • Alternate picking on the way down too: the tendency is to use only downstrokes.
  • Keep fingers down behind the one that's playing and lift them one by one as the descent goes.
  • Once the descent is fluent, connect ascent and descent straight away with no pause at the hinge.
