Rock improvisation in D (Drop D, initiation)
A slowed-down, repetitive version of a D Drop D grid, designed as a first approach to improvising in this tuning: each chord lasts two full bars instead of one, leaving time to build a real phrase before the change rather than reacting chord by chord under pressure. Drop D has already solved the fretting hand's technical difficulty for power chords (one-finger barre, see the dedicated intro sheet): what's left to work on here is purely the improvisation itself, using the D minor pentatonic scale in position 1.
Tips
Use the full two bars of each chord: a short phrase followed by silence beats a phrase that gets cut off by the next chord change.
The pentatonic's D root matches the open bass string in Drop D — an instant landmark by ear, unlike standard tuning where you'd have to fret it.
Once this version feels comfortable, look for a faster version of the same grid in the catalogue to find the same notes under a more realistic time pressure.
